Celebrate Ruby Duncan’s Achievements with Shelley Berkley at The Great Fry-Day Event
Dear Friends and Supporters,
We are thrilled to invite you to an evening of recognition, remembrance, and inspiration. Join us this Sunday night as we honor a true pioneer for social justice, Ruby Duncan. Hosted by Shelley Berkley, this special event is dubbed "The Great Fry-Day Gathering," set to take place from 5-7pm at Mario’s West Side Market, located at 1425 West Lake Mead Blvd in Las Vegas.
RSVP: [email protected] or 702-755-9933
Ruby Duncan's journey from the cotton fields of Tallulah, Louisiana, to the forefront of social welfare advocacy in Nevada is a testament to her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to justice. Moving to Las Vegas in search of better opportunities, Duncan encountered and overcame adversities that would set the stage for a groundbreaking advocacy movement. Her resilience in the face of personal injury and the systemic inequities of the welfare system sparked a solidarity among mothers that would catalyze significant social change.
Despite the barriers imposed by racial and social policies of the time, Duncan and her peers formed the Clark County Welfare Rights Organization, directly challenging the status quo and demanding equitable treatment for all families in need. Their efforts culminated in historic marches on the Las Vegas Strip, capturing national attention and paving the way for Nevada to embrace vital social welfare programs, including food stamps and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Duncan's legacy continued with the establishment of Operation Life, bringing essential services to the Historic Westside community.
Today, the impact of Ruby Duncan's activism is visible across Southern Nevada, from schools named in her honor to the ongoing fight for justice and equality she inspired. Her story is a powerful reminder of the difference one person, supported by a community, can make in the lives of many. |
As we gather to celebrate Ruby Duncan's remarkable life and legacy, we also reflect on the enduring challenges that call us to action. Let this event not only serve as a tribute to Duncan's achievements but also as a call to continue the work she began. Your presence will not only honor her legacy but also inspire continued advocacy for social justice in Nevada and beyond.
Please join us for an evening of commemoration, community, and commitment to the causes Ruby Duncan championed. Together, we can honor the past while shaping a more just and equitable future.
We look forward to seeing you there,
